Abraham's was the vision of our patriarch, Dannie Abraham, in 1953. The store remains family owned and operated and has styled generations of Mississippians and beyond. We strive to provide quality products and superb customer service. Shopping online with Abraham's gives you an opportunity to support small business and shop local.
In 1953, Dannie & Grace Abraham opened their first store in Inverness, Mississippi, with little money and big dreams. Dannie's father had immigrated from Lebanon in ~1920 and settled in Belzoni, Mississippi where his family had opened a store a few years before. When Dannie returned from proudly serving his country in the Korean War, he married his sweetheart and opened a store of his own.
Abraham's early days involved long hours and lots of hard work. As my grandparents tell it, they opened with barely $1.00 to the name, bought what little merchandise they could afford (or get on credit), and worked until midnight every day to make it a success. They raised 3 sons, teaching them the family business from the time the boys could see over the counter.
In 1976, they renovated the Honey Theatre in Indianola, and Abraham's moved to its current location. Around the same time, their son Michael was coming home from college each weekend to work at the store and soon changed his major to Business as his interest in the family business (and his future wife, Helen) grew.
In 1987, Michael and Helen bought the Indianola store from Michael's parents. All 3 sons would eventually follow in the family business, with the oldest opening a men's shop in Cleveland and the youngest opening a sister store for women's clothing.
In the early 90s, a massive fire threatened Downtown Indianola, destroying several businesses, but luckily Abraham's survived, with only severe smoke damage.
In 1998, Abraham's purchased the building next door, formerly Weinberg's, to further expand the boutique department store.
In 2003, Abraham's celebrated 50 years in business.
In 2007, Michael and Helen's son, Frazier, moves home to manage the store.
In 2018, Abraham's celebrated its 65th Anniversary. That same year, Hallie and Victoria launched our website at abrahamsindianola.com
In 2020, Abraham's survived the pandemic, lockdowns and all, thanks to our loyal customers. Dannie Abraham celebrated his 90th birthday! Michael & Helen, Frazier & Victoria, and Hallie, along with a rockstar staff, carry on the family business almost 70 years later.
